CHILDREN & FAMILIES

Dyslexia testing for children aged 8 and over

Our online child dyslexia assessments help you understand reading, spelling and learning difficulties from age eight. When learning takes more effort than it seems to for others, it can be hard to know where to start. We listen to your concerns and help you explore the right assessment and support. We also offer study skills help for GCSE and A-level students who need practical support with revision, organisation or written work.

Arranging dyslexia testing for your child

At what age can my child be tested?

We usually recommend dyslexia and handwriting assessments from age eight. Before eight, literacy and handwriting skills are still developing, so findings may be less conclusive for some children. If your child is younger, speak to us about individual suitability, early support and the best time to assess. Support does not need to wait for a diagnosis.

What should I tell the assessor?

Explain what you and your child’s school have noticed about reading, spelling and written work. Tell us about support already tried, any previous assessments and your child’s strengths and interests. We explain what background information is needed before the appointment.

How does an online child assessment work?

We discuss suitability and explain the equipment, questionnaires and appointment arrangements with you beforehand. Tell us about your child’s access needs or concerns so we can plan suitable arrangements. The assessment explores learning skills alongside reading and spelling.

What happens after testing?

The written report explains the assessment findings and provides recommendations relevant to home and school. Share these with your child’s teacher or SENCo to discuss support. If your question concerns exam arrangements, speak to the school about its evidence requirements and approval process.

What if handwriting is the main difficulty?

If getting ideas onto paper is difficult, tell us whether the concern is spelling, handwriting, written expression or a combination. We also offer handwriting difficulties assessments from age eight and can explain which route fits your questions.
